Apreciable Grace:

Mi aventura a Guatemala  fué en verdad una experiencia única.  Vi gentes cargando haces de leña y canastos llenos de ropa en sus cabezas, caminando a la orilla de los caminos.  Ancianos cargando bultos de todo lo que uno se pueda imaginar en sus sobre cargados cuerpos por los años.

La pobreza es increible y todo esto en medio de montañas majestuosas coronadas con muchos volcanes activos. Hay enormes ruinas de templos Mayas antiguos en muchas partes. Descansando sobre uno de estos antiguos monumentos se me ocurre que es una maravilla que cualquier vestigio de esta civilización haya sobrevivido hasta el siglo 21.

Los Mayas le dieron al mundo uno de los más exactos calendarios conocidos por el hombre (el cual, incidentalmente terminará pronto).  Ellos concisamente trazaron los cielos y usaron matemáticas avanzadas.  Ellos hablaron y escribieron en uno de los 5 idiomas originales conocidos al hombre.

Nosotros llevamos en este viaje, a los niños de las aldeas en las montañas,  útiles escolares, cuadernos, lápices, saca puntas y  borradores y mientras me rodeaban me llamaban "el monstruo gentil" porque con mis seis pies y mis 200 libras yo era el más grande de todos los de ahi.  Estos regalos fueron ofrecidos por la magnifica gente del área de  Gulf Breeze y por el Pensacola Beach Women's Club.  Fueron recolectados en Danah's Hair Studio en la Hwy. 98

En el próximo viaje a Guatemala me gustaria hacer algo más para ayudar a estas bellas gentes.  Si alguien quiere ayudar, por favor consideren hacer una contribución en cualquiera de las sucursales del Wachovia Bank a nombre de First Nations Intertribal Association Inc., una organización libre de impuestos. Nosotros damos ayuda a Nativos Americanos que a menudo viven en condiciones dificiles en América.

My adventure to Guatemala was certainly an eye opening experience. I saw folks carrying bundles of wood and baskets of laundry on their heads, walking along the roadsides. Old men were hauling bundles of everything imaginable on their already over burdened aging bodies.

The poverty is unbelievable and all in the mist of majestic mountains topped with many active volcanoes. There are huge ancient Mayan temple ruins in many areas. As I rest upon one of these ancient stone monuments, it occurs to me that it is a wonder that any portion of this civilization has survived into the 21st century.

The Maya gave the world one of the most accurate calendars known to man (which incidentally ends soon). They concisely charted the heavens and used advanced math. They spoke and wrote in one of the five original languages known to man. 

We brought the children in the mountain villages school notebooks, pencils, sharpeners and erasers on this trip, and as they crowded around me they called me the "gentle monster" because at just six feet and two hundred lbs. I was larger than anyone there. These gifts were offered by the wonderful people of the Gulf Breeze area and the Pensacola Beach Women’s Club. They were collected at Danah's Hair Studio on Hwy 98.

On the next trip to Guatemala, I would like to do something a little more substantial to help these beautifully people. This has been our first trip to South America and what a wonderful experience it was!
