Orgulloso por todos los Latinos   English Version

Espero que todo esté bien contigo y tu familia.  Ví las fotos de la graduación de tu sobrino.  Muchas felicidades para tí y tu familia.  Es realmente un orgullo muy grande para toda la familia Hispana cuando se logra una meta tan grande como la que alcanzó tu sobrino.

Combatiendo la Injusticia en Alabama

Un proyecto de ley fué recientemente introducido por el Senador de Alabama, Mickey Hammon que autorizaría a la policia a confiscar las propiedades de ilegales.  Uno tiene que preguntarse que motivaria una ley tan mesquina y anti Cristiana?  Yo supongo que Sen. Hammon esta simplemente alineandose con los Senadores Sessions y Shelby quienes encabezaron el ataque en los esfuerzos del Presidente Bush para reformar la ley de migración.

A pesar de la mala información basada en el aplauso político, esto no puede ser sobre seguridad nacional. Este proyecto de ley federal es un esfuerzo para mejorar la seguridad a lo largo de la frontera y registrar a la gente ilegal en los Estados Unidos.  Como el Secretario de Homeland Security dijo recientemente," El único que gana sin esta legislación es el que está vendiendo documentos falsos".  La gente sin antecedentes criminales podrian aplicar para visas de trabajo, pagar una multa por haber entrado ilegalmente y permanecer aqui si cumplen ciertos requisitos.  El  proyecto de ley permitiria a los que viven en la sombra a salir hacia adelante  a empezar una vida adentro-- en vez de en las orillas de -- nuestro pais.

No se equivoque en este tópico importante, la gente que está viniendo a los Estados Unidos  de México, Centro y Sur América no son terroristas.  Son gentes empujados de sus paises en busca de trabajo para alimentar a sus familias.  Si nuestra fe Cristiana enseña que no es un pecado robar un pán para no morir de hambre, como puede ser pecado para la gente violar leyes obsoletas de migración  para darle de comer a sus familias?  Quien entre nosotros no haría lo mismo para darle de comer a nuestros hijos?

Sin embargo, estos inmigrantes no vienen a los Estados Unidos a robar sino que a trabajar. Ellos con gusto trabajan largas horas en trabajos que los ciudadanos Americanos escogen no hacer porque  la mayoria de ellos  tienen mejores opciones.  Cuanto tendria que pagarle a un ciudadano  de los Estados Unidos para que trabaje en el campo recogiendo fresas en el sol caliente todo el dia o repetitivamente  cortar carne en una planta procesadora de carne? Inmigrantes llenan una necesidad no cubierta por los trabajadores de los Estados Unidos.

En una carta abierta al Representante del Estado de Alabama Hammon y a los Senadores de los Estados Unidos Sesssions y Shelby, hacemos una pregunta fundamental: Que require el Señor de nosotros?.  La Biblia no es silenciosa. :"El Señor, tu Dios.. es amigo del  extranjero, alimentandolo y vistiendolo. Asi tu tambien debes de hacerte amigo del extranjero...." (Deuteronomio 10: 17-19).  Muchos pasajes del Antiguo Testamento hablan de nuestras responsabilidades para los que son ajenos y extranjeros entre nosotros: Ex.22:21; Lev.19: 33-34; Dt. 14:29, 24;17; Jer. 7:6, 22;3; Ez. 22:; Zach. 7:10; y Mal.3:5.  El Nuevo Testamento hace hincapié en este precepto de la casa de Dios diciendo: "Toda la ley  se cumple en una palabra, Tu amarás a tu vecino como a ti mismo." (Gal. 5:14)

Jesus, tambien insiste que nosotros respondamos con compasiion a los necesitados diciendo:  "Yo tenia hambre y me diste de comer, Tenia sed y me diste de beber, era un extranjero y me diste la bienvenida..." Lo que hagamos por el mñas pequeño de nuestros hermanos, lo hacemos por Cristo. (Matt 25:34-46).  No son estas gentes nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo?

Cuando la historia juzgue este tiempo en nuestro pais, nos encontrtremos nosotros en el lado de aquellos que abrazaron los más altos ideales de democracia y le dieron la bienvenida a los que luchaban por un futuro mejor? O estaremos paralizados por el miedo, o seremos el chivo expiatorio y xenofóbicos?  Basados en como tratamos a esta gente tan trabajadora, nos pondrá Cristo en el lado de las ovejas o de las cabras?

El estado de Alabama recientemente se disculpó por los años de discriminación legal. Pero, en el mismo aliento, ahora hace blanco en otra raza, Hispanicos.  El proyecto del Senador Hammon escoge a una clase de gentes y aboga para que, en nuestro nombre, el estado robe todo lo que ellos han ganado con el sudor de sus frentes.  Que va a seguir?

Como Martin Niemoeller observó una vez,"Cuando los Nazis llegaron a recoger a los comunistas, Yo me quedé callado.  Cuando llegaron a buscar a los Socialistas, yo me quedé callado.  Cuando llegaron por los Católicos, yo me quede callado.  Cuando llegaron por los Judios, yo me quedé callado.  Y cuando llegaron por mi, no habia nadie que pudiera hablar."  No nos quedaremos callados.

I hope everything is great with you and your family.  I saw the pictures of your nephew's graduation.  Congratulations to you and your family.  It is really  a great honor for the whole Hispanic Family when a goal like your nephew's is achieved.

Fighting Injustice in Alabama

A bill was recently introduced by Alabama State Senator Mickey Hammon that would authorize the police to seize the property of illegal aliens.  One has to ask what would motivate such a mean spirited and unChristian law.  I guess Sen. Hammon is simply lining up with U.S. Senators Sessions and Shelby who led the attack on President Bush's efforts to reform immigration law.

Despite misinformation based on political grandstanding, this cannot be about national security.  This federal immigration bill is an effort to improve security along the border and to register people illegally in the United States.  As the Secretary of Homeland Security recently said, "The only one who wins without this legislation is the guy peddling phony documents."  People without criminal records could apply for work visas, pay a fine for having entered illegally, and remain here if they meet certain requirements.  The bill would allow those living in the shadows to come forward to begin a life within--as opposed to at the fringes of--our country.

Make no mistake about this important issue, the people who are coming to the United States from Mexico, Central and South America are not terrorists. They are people driven from their countries in search of work to feed their families.  If our Christian faith teaches that it is not a sin to steal a loaf of bread to avoid starving, how can it be sinful for people to violate outdated immigration laws to feed their families?  Who among us wouldn't do the same to feed our children? 

However, these immigrants did not come to the Unites States to steal, but to work.  They gladly work long hours in jobs that U.S. citizens choose not to work because most Americans have better options.  How much would you have to pay a U.S. citizen to work in a field picking strawberries in the hot sun all day or repetitively cutting meat in a meat processing plant?  Immigrants fill an unmet need for workers in the United States. 

In an open letter to Alabama State Representative Hammon and U.S. Senators Sessions and Shelby, we ask a fundamental question: What does the Lord require of us?  The Bible is not silent.  "The Lord, your God . . . befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him.  So you too must befriend the alien..."  (Deuteronomy 10: 17-19).  Many passages from the Old Testament speak to our responsibilities to those who are aliens and strangers among us: Ex. 22:21; Lev. 19: 33-34; Dt. 14:29, 24:17; Jer. 7:6, 22:3; Ez. 22:7; Zech. 7:10; and Mal. 3:5.  The New Testament hammers this precept of God home stating: "The whole law is fulfilled in one word, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Gal. 5:14)

Jesus, too, insists that we respond with compassion to the needy saying: "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me...."  Whatever we do for the least of our brothers, we do for Christ. (Matt 25:34-46)  Aren't these people our brothers and sisters in Christ? 

When history judges this time in our country, will we find ourselves on the side of those who embraced the highest ideals of democracy and welcomed those striving for a better future?  Or will we be paralyzed by fear, scapegoating and xenophobia?  Based on how we treat these hardworking people, will Christ put us on the side of the sheep or the goats? 

The state of Alabama recently apologized for years of legal discrimination. Yet, in the same breath, it now targets another race, Hispanics.  Sen. Hammon's bill singles out a class of people and advocates that, in our name, the state steals all that they have earned by the sweat of their brow.  What is next? 

As Martin Niemoeller once observed, "When the Nazis came to get the communists, I was silent.  When they came to get the Socialists, I was silent.  When they came to get the Catholics, I was silent. When they came to get the Jews, I was silent.  And when they came to get me, there was no one left to speak."  We will not stand silent.
