Dibujos y pinturas por reos en el programa de Arte Capturada en la cárcel del Condado de Escambia están en exhibición en la Galeria 88 hasta el 24 de Julio.

     El programa de Arte Capturada empezó en la cárcel del condado de Escambia en 2007, con un profesor voluntario y materiales donados.  El programa existe, solamente sostenido por donaciones y venta de los trabajos de arte producidos por los presos.

     Los participantes se someten a un exámen de aptitud y deben de tener comportamiento ejemplar para formar parte del programa de Arte Capturada.

Siempre hay una lista de espera para ingresar ya que el espacio es limitado a 10 o menos reos a la vez.  Los reos pueden ahora pintar desde las 7 a.m. hasta las 10 p.m. y muchos de ellos lo hacen.

     Los participadores dicen que el programa les ayuda en su auto estima, desarrolla nuevas y potencialmente  productivas habilidades y ha servido como un punto positivo de orgullo y renovada conección con familiares que ya los habian dado por perdidos.  De acuerdo con Sybil Sahuque y Sharon Giraud que empezaron el programa, también ha tenido un efecto positivo y calmante en toda el ala de los presos. Othos reclusos pueden observar a los hombres cuando están pintando y dibujando y se entusiasman de que ellos también pueden participar en el programa.

     Por falta de una maestra voluntaria, no hay ahora un programa comparable para las mujeres detenidas. Hay esperanzas de contribuciones y talvez, de una artista femenina que asista en establecer un programa para las mujeres.

     Trabajos de la exhibición estarán a la venta a precios modestos, pero deben de permanecer en exhibición hasta el final de la exposición.  El 100% de los ingresos son reinvertidos en el programa.

     Arte de Adentro para Fuera es co-patrocinada por el National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the Prison Book Project, Escambia County Jail Captured Art Program, WUWF Public Media and the ACLU of Florida.

      Drawings and paintings by inmates in the Captured Art program at Escambia County Jail are on display at the WUWF's Gallery 88 until July 24.

      The Captured Art program began at the Escambia county Jail in 2007 with a volunteer teacher and donated supplies. The program remains, solely funded  through donations and sales of the art works produced by the inmates.

      Participants are given an arts aptitude test and must have exemplary behavior to be part of the Captured Art program. There is always a waiting list to get in as space is limited to ten or fewer inmates at a time.  Inmates are now allowed to paint or draw from 7a.m. until 10 p.m. and many of them do.

       Participants say the program builds self esteem, develops new and potentially marketable skills, and has served as a point of positive pride and renewed connection with family members who may have all but given up on them. According to Sybil Sahuque and Sharon Giraud who began the program, it has also had a positive and calming effect in the entire men's ward. Other inmates may view the men as they paint and draw and are encouraged that they too can participate in the program.

       For lack of a volunteer teacher, there is currently no comparable  program for the women inmates. Hopes for contributions and perhaps a female artist may come forward to assist in establishing an ongoing program for the women inmates.

       Works from the art exhibit will be for sale at modest prices, but must  remain on display until the end of the exhibit. One hundred percent of the  proceeds are reinvested into the program.
