Anjelica Patricia Fetty (ahijada/sobrina) se graduo de Columbus State University en Georgia el 12 de Mayo. Ella obtuvo el grado de Bachiller en Literatura. ~ Anjelica Patricia Fetty (gaddaughter/niece) graduated from Columbus State University in Georgia on May 12. She earned a Bachelors Degree in English Literature.

Gloria Resendez Zermeno (hermana) obtuve una Maestria en Educacion Secundaria en la Universidad de Texas-El Paso en el mes de Mayo. ~ Gloria Resendez Zermeño (sister) earned her Masters Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Texas at El Paso, also in May.

Este fin de semana pasado mi sobrino, Ray, se graduó de West Point Military Academy. Yo hice el viaje de Florida a New York para asistir a este evento único en mi vida a pesar de muchos detalles prácticos en contra .

Fué una experiencia gloriosa  leer nuestro apellido en la lista de nombres de los graduantes.  "Raymundo Resendez IV".  Fué una gran cosa cuando mis hermanos o hermanas asistieron al colegio, pero ver a uno de nuestros hijos apuntarse una victoria me hizo recordar nuestro árbol genealógico y refleccionar en como habia sucedido todo esto.

Al escuchar los nombres de los graduantes cuando caminaban hacia el escenario para ser felicitados por el Vice presidente de los Estados Unidos, yo noté que nombres como Pérez, Rodriguez, Kim y Nguen eran llamados. Yo pensé en las familias inmigrates sentadas en el estadio y deseé que las gentes que critican a los inmigrantes extranjeros pudieran estar ahi y ver la diversidad de la clase graduante.

Fué un ejemplo perfecto de lo que yo quiero decir cuando digo que la gente simplemente necesita tener paciencia.  Se lleva tiempo, a veces generaciones, antes de que podamos ver el potencial de las personas. Ellas pueden venir a los Estados Unidos hablando muy poco o nada de Inglés, pero sus hijos hablarán dos idiomas fluidamente. Pueden ser pobres cuando llegan aqui pero sus hijos se educarán y prosperarán.

No está muy claro si mi bisabuelo, Manuel Resendez, nació en España o en México o si llegó aqui legalmente.  Después de todo, la frontera no era como es hoy.  Pero mi abuelo, Raymundo Resendez, fué el primero reconocido como "Americano"  en el lado paterno.  El estaba encargado del equipaje en una compañia de ferrocarriles.  Murió joven, mientras trabajaba, dejando a mi padre, Raymundo Resendez, II, quien ha trabajado muy duro por más de 50 años (y aún lo hace) como un vendedor de repuestos diesel y quien crió 9 hijos.  Mi hermano, Raymundo Resendez III trabaja como como un coordinador regional para el Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Texas y ha dedicado su carrera a  ayudar a mantener las comunidades seguras, y ha educado dos muchachos muy impresionantes, Mathew y Raymundo Resendez IV.

Si, se puede llevar mucho tiempo, pero nadie trabaja tan fuerte si no tiene prospectos.  Yo estoy tan orgullosa de mis sobrino y sobrinas porque yo se que ellos están trabajando para hacer una contribución importante a esta nación y al mundo en formas que yo estoy segura que mi abuelo nunca soñó.

This weekend, my nephew Ray graduated from West Point Military Academy. I made the trip from Florida to New York to see the once in a lifetime event despite practicalities.

It was such a proud experience to read our family name on the list ofgraduates: "Raymundo Resendez IV".  It was a big deal that any one of my sisters or brothers went to college, but to see our kids stepping it up a notch made me look back at our family tree and reflect on how it all happened.

As I listened to the names of the graduates as they walked up to the stage to be congratulated by the vice-president of the United States, I noticed names like Perez, Rodriguez, Kim, and Nguen being called.  I thought of the immigrant families sitting in the stadium and wished that people who criticized foreign migrants could be there to see the diversity of the graduating class.

It was a perfect example of what I mean when I say that people simply need to have patience.  It takes time, sometimes generations, before we can see people's potential.  They may come to the U.S. knowing little or no English, but their children will speak two languages fluently.  They may be poor when they get here, but their children will be educated and prosper.

It is not clear if my great grandfather, Manuel Resendez, was born in Spain or in Mexico or if he came here legally.  After all, the border wasn't what it is today.  But my grandfather, Raymundo Resendez, the first known "American" on my father's side. He was a luggage handler for a railroad company.  He died at a young age while he was working, leaving behind my dad, Raymundo Resendez, II, who has worked hard for more than 50 years (and still does) as a diesel parts salesman and raised nine children.  My brother, Raymundo Resendez, III, works as a regional liaison for the Texas Department of Public Safety and has dedicated his career to helping to keep communities safe . . . and has raised two awesome boys, Matthew and Raymundo Resendez, IV.

Yes, it can take a long time, but no one works so hard without prospects.  I am so proud of my nephews and nieces because I know that they are working to make an important contribution to this nation and the world in ways that I am sure my great grandfather never even dreamed.
