Cadena de Choques en el Highway 4 ~ Pileup on Highway 4  English Version

El Mièrcoles, 9 de Enero llamadas reportando una serie de choques en cadena que se extenderon casi 2 millas de la Interestatal 4 entre Orlando y Tampa empezaron como a las 4:30a.m. Los choques involucraron 70 vehiculos incluyendo dos camiones del Servicio Postal de los Estados Unidos, y resultaron en 4 personas muertas y 38 golpeadas, 5 de ellas criticamente.  Uno de las muertos iba hacia su trabajo en Disney World Animal Kingdom.

El jefe de voceros de Florida Highway Patrol, Maj. Ernie Duarte. dijo que 10 de los choques fueron el resultado de una combinaciòn de mal tiempo y descuido en conducir. 

"No podemos controlar el tiempo, pero si podemos controlar nuestro acelerador" dijo èl.  "Esta gente no disminuyò la velocidad".

Los oficiales meteorològicos habian pronosticado neblina en el àrea temprano de la mañana, y los oficiales de la Divisiòn Forestal Estatal dieron una advertencia la noche anterior acerca del humo de una quema permitida, fuera de control,  que podria restringir la visibilidad.

Los grupos de emergencia trabajaron durante horas enviando a los heridos a varios hospitales en la regiòn, tomando reportes del incidente y moviendo las ruinas.  La ùltima vìctima, que no sobreviviò, fùe encontrada como a las 4 p.m.

El incidente ha desencadenado una conciencia  repentina por la seguridad de tràfico, causando a The National Traffic Safety Institute (NTSI) a dar a conocer los siguientes consejos de seguridad durante condiciones de mal tiempo.

- Obeserve o escuche los reportes de tràfico antes de emprender su viaje.  Si es posible, no opere un vehiculo hasta que la amenaza haya pasado.

- Encienda las luces bajas

- La neblina tiene sus propios peligros.  Las carreteras pueden tener poca visibilidad o estar mojadas o lisas.

- Observe los vehiculos de adelante y no sòlo los vehiculos enfrente suyo.

- Disminuya la velocidad gradualmente y aumente la distancia.

- Mantenga los vidrios limpios, asegùrese que tiene buenas llantas y estè seguro que sus luces y los tricos funcionan apropiadamente.

- Si la visibilidad es extremadamente pobre y Ud. no puede ver la orilla del camino, sàlgase hacia la derecha, si es posible, al otro lado de la barda.

Cary Quiñones, Vice Presidente de NTSI de la regiòn Southeastern dijo "Esta horrible tragedia deberia de recordar a la gente a considerar disminuir la velocidad y observar seguridad vial durante cualquier clase de condiciones atmosfèricas.  Nosotros sugerimos que la gente preste atenciòn a los reportes de mal tiemp antes de salir de viaje y si es posible, no manejen en circumstancias extremas.

On Wednesday, Jan. 9, calls reporting a series of pileups that spanned nearly two miles of Interstate 4 between Orlando and Tampa began at around 4:30 a.m.  The crashes involved 70 vehicles including two U.S. Postal Service trucks, and resulted in four people dead and 38 injured, five were injured critically. One of the deceased was on his way to work at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom.

Florida Highway Patrol's chief spokesman, Maj. Ernie Duarte, said that the 10 pileups were the result of a combination of bad weather and unsafe driving.

"We can't control the weather, but we can control our accelerator," he said. "These people didn't slow down."

Weather officials had forecasted fog in the area early that day, and state Division of Forestry officials issued a warning the night before that smoke from an out of control prescribed burn might impair visibility.

Emergency crews worked for hours sending the injured to various hospitals in the region, taking reports of the incidents and moving wreckage.  The last victim, who did not survive, was found at about 4 p.m.

The incident has triggered sudden awareness for traffic safety prompting The National Traffic Safety Institute (NTSI) to release the following driver safety tips during poor weather conditions:

- Watch or listen to traffic reports prior to driving to your destination. If possible, do not operate a vehicle until any threat has passed.

- Turn you headlights on low beam.

- Fog has its own special hazards. Roads can have poor visibility or be wet and slippery.

- Watch vehicles up ahead and not just the vehicle in front of you.

- Slow down gradually and increase your following distance.

- Keep your vehicle's windows clean, making sure you have good tires, and ensure your lights and windshield wipers are working properly.

- If visibility becomes extremely poor, and you can't see the road's edge, pull off on the right, if possible on the other side of  guardrails.

Cary Quinones, Vice President of NTSI's Southeastern region said, "This horrible tragedy should remind people to consider slowing down and observing traffic safety during any kind of weather condition. We highly suggest that people heed weather reports prior to driving to their destinations and, if possible, do not drive in dire circumstances."
