"La jugadora de softball de Pensacola Junior College, Geraldine Puertas, hizo un hit alrededor del globo para PJC aún cuando el Equipo USA derrotó a su pais, Venezuel, 11-0 en el primer juego de las olimpiadas el 12 de Agosto." La estudiante de segundo año de PJC es una infielder/designated hitter del equipo Venezolano, el cual experimentó su primera olimpiada.  Las  preliminares de softball continuaron hasta el 20 de Agosto cuando empezó el juego por las medallas de los Juegos Olimpicos de Pekin 2008.

Puertas, quien estudia tecnologia de recreo, dejó Pekin el 22 de Agosto con destino a PJC.  Ella es la tercera base para PJC y regresa para la temporada 2008-2009 de softball de los Piratas.

Brenda Peña, PJC softball coach y otros miembros del equipo atendieron el primer Dia del torneo de softball en el restaurate Kooter Browns de Pensacola.  Ellas vieron como Puertas hacia historia deportiva para su alma mater y su pais.

"Fué un momento de mucho orgullo," dijo Peña.  "Yo estaba orgullosa por ella y orgullosa por PJC por tener uno de sus atletas en el escenario internacional jugando contra los mejores jugadores del mundo."

En su primer año en PJC, Puertas  recibió reconocimento por ALL-State segundo equipo y  honores de Academic All -Conference.  También fué selecionada al National Fastpitch Coaches Associatio All-Region Team. "Geraldine es una persona sobresaliente,; dijo Peña Es una gran satisfacción saber que Ud. esta ayudando a gente no sólo en su vecindad sino también al rededor del mundo.

Peña anadió, "Mientras Geraldine está aqui obteniendo una buena educación, ella está compartiendo sus experiencias internacionales con nosotros,  Ella es una tremenda compañera y es tan sin presunciones como es talentosa.  Ella es amable y agradecida en todas sus acciones.  No me aguanto porque regrese para ver su sonrisa, oir su risa y oir todo acerca de sus experiencias olímpicas. Estoy muy orgullosa de ser su coach.”

La comunidad Latina está orgullosa de ti Geraldine!!  Felicitaciones a ti y al coach Peña.

"Pensacola Junior College softball player Geraldine Puertas hit one around  the  globe for PJC even though Team USA hammered her home country, Venezuela, 11-0  at the Olympic opener Aug. 12.

The PJC sophomore is an infielder/designated hitter for the Venezuelan team,  which experienced its first Olympics. Softball preliminaries continued  through  Aug. 20 when medal play began for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Puertas, a recreation technology major, left Beijing Aug. 22 and headed  straight  for PJC. She is the starting third baseman for PJC and returns for the  2008-2009  Pirates softball season.

PJC softball coach Brenda Peña and team members caught Day 1 of the Olympic  softball tournament at Pensacola's Kooter Browns restaurant. They watched  Puertas make sports history for her college alma mater and home country.

"It was such a proud moment," Peña said. "I was proud for her and proud for  PJC  to have one our athletes on the international stage playing against the best  players in the world."

In her freshman year at PJC, Puertas received recognition for All-State  second  team and Academic All-Conference honors. She was also voted to the National  Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Team.

"Geraldine is an outstanding person," Peña said. "It is a great feeling to  know  you are helping people not only in your own backyard but from around the  world.

Peña added, "While Geraldine is here getting a quality education, she is  sharing  her international experience with us.  She is a tremendous teammate and as  unassuming as she is talented.  She is gracious and thankful in her actions.  I  can't wait for her to return to see her smile, hear her laugh and to hear all  about her Olympic experience. I am proud to be her coach."

The Latino community is proud of you too, Geraldine!  Congratulations to you  and  Coach Peña.
