Local residents report receiving phone calls from an individual claiming to be with the Security and Fraud department at Visa. The caller provides a badge number and notifies the resident that his or her card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern. The caller then asks if the resident purchased "an anti-telemarketing device for $497.99 from a marketing company based in Arizona." When the resident responds "no," the caller continues with the statement: "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives residents address), is that correct?" After confirming the address, the caller then asks the resident to verify they are in possession of the card by reading the three digit security number printed on the back. Once the caller has this information, they end the call and use the information to charge 497.99 to the resident’s card. Residents who are contacted by an individual claiming to work for any credit card issuer should not give out any personal or account information. Instead, they should contact their credit card company directly for verification or questions regarding their accounts.
