Comité de Migración Se Reune Para Discutir Acerca de las Redadas de Inmigración.  Preocupación por los Niños. ~ Migration Committee Meets to Discuss Immigration Raids, Concern for Children  English Version

El 10 de marzo, El Comité de Migración de la Conferencia Estadounidence de Obispos Católicos fue el anfitrión de una reunión con Julie Myer, Secretaria Asistente del Departamento de Seguridad de la Patria (DHS) para discutir el impacto de las redadas para el cumplimiento de la ley en todo el país.  La Secretaria Asistente Myers encabeza la agencia de Cumplimiento de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) dentro del DHS, el cual se encarga de hacer cumplir la ley de inmigración en el interior del país.

El Obispo John Wester, de la ciudad de Salt Lake, director del comité, manifestó que el tono de la reunión no fue de confrontación sino cooperativo.  Mientras que se reconocía el derecho del gobierno de hacer cumplir la ley, el comité le dijo a la Secretaria Asistente Myers que el uso de redadas debería ser minimizado, y quizás hasta paralizado del todo.

El Obispo Wester dijo: “Quisimos comunicar nuestro deseo de trabajar con el gobierno para minimizar el uso de redadas para reducir el impacto negativo de las redadas sobre las familias de inmigrantes.”  “Nosotros sentimos que la Secretaria Asistente estuvo dispuesta a trabajar más ligadamente con nosotros para prevenir la separación de familias y proteger a los niños.”

En los últimos dieciocho meses, varias redadas han sido ejecutadas en diversas áreas a lo ancho del país, arrestando más de 250 trabajadores.  Durante estas redadas, niños quienes son ciudadanos estadounidenses, han sido separados de sus padres indocumentados quienes fueron arrestados durante las redadas.

El Obispo Wester dijo:  “Nuestro primer interés es reducir el trauma que los niños experimentan cuando a un padre se le lleva súbitamente.”  “Le informamos a la Secretaria Asistente que el personal de la Diócesis y de Las Caridades Católicas están en buena posición para ayudar a las familias en el desenlace y resultados de una acción de cumplimiento.”

El Obispo Wester agregó que la discusión se concentró también en intereses comunes, incluyendo la necesidad de una reforma de inmigración comprensiva y la lucha para detener el tráfico de humanos.  El comité también expresó, por razones humanitarias, su oposición a la actividad de complimiento concentrado en iglesias, hospitales, o programas de servicio social.

El Obispo Wester dijo:  “Los obispos del comité expresaron preocupación acerca de las acciones de cumplimiento de leyes migratorias en los alrededores de parroquias donde los inmigrantes buscan asistencia espiritual, al igual que en aquellos sitios que proveen asistencia a necesidades básicas”.  “Creemos que la Secretaria Asistente Myers escuchó nuestras preocupaciones en este tema”.

El Obispo Wester agregó:  “No queremos que los inmigrantes estén con miedo de asistir a la misa o de buscar la asistencia básica que necesitan.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration hosted a meeting on March 10 with Assistant Secretary Julie Myers of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to discuss the impact of immigration enforcement raids around the country. Assistant Secretary Myers heads the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency within DHS, which is charged with the enforcement of immigration law in the interior of the country.

Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City, chairman of the committee, stated that the tone of the meeting was not confrontational but cooperative. While acknowledging the right of the government to enforce the law, the committee told Assistant Secretary Myers that the use of raids should be minimized, if not abandoned altogether.

“We wanted to communicate our desire to work with the government to minimize the use of raids and to reduce the negative impact of the raids on immigrant families,” said Bishop Wester. “We felt that the Assistant Secretary was willing to work more closely with us to prevent the separation of families and to protect children.”

Over the past eighteen months, various raids have been conducted in diverse areas across the country, arresting more than 250 workers. During these raids children who are U.S. citizens have been separated from undocumented parents arrested during the raids.

“Our primary concern is to reduce the trauma that children experience when a parent is taken away suddenly,” said Bishop Wester. “We informed the Assistant Secretary that diocesan and Catholic Charities personnel are in a good position to help families in the aftermath of an enforcement action.”

Bishop Wester added that the discussion focused on common interests, as well, including the need for comprehensive immigration reform and the fight to end human trafficking. The committee also expressed opposition to enforcement activity focused on churches, hospitals, or social service programs on humanitarian grounds.

“The bishops of the committee expressed concern about enforcement activity around parishes, where migrants seek spiritual assistance, as well as places which provide basic needs assistance,” said Bishop Wester. “We believe that Assistant Secretary Myers heard our concerns on this matter.”

“We do not want migrants to be afraid to attend Mass or to seek the basic assistance that they need,” Bishop Wester added.
