La Matricula de Estudiantes Inernacionales en el UWF ha Aumentando ~ UWF International Student Enrollment Increases (English Version)

La Universidad de West Florida ha reportado un aumento del 11 por ciento en el número de estudiantes internacionales en la universidad este Otoño, llevando asi una matricula de 309 estudiantes, de 278 que se registraron en la Primavera del 2006.  Los estudiantes representan a 60 paises de cinco continentes.  La porción mas grande de estudiantes, 55 en total, vienen del Brazil, seguidos por Japón con 39 estudiantes.  Solo los continentes de Australia y Antartíca no estan representados en el campus de UWF.

"Estamos extremadamente complacidos con el incremento en matrículas," dijo Phyllis Metcalf-Turner, el vice presidente asociado de la oficina de Diversidad y Educación y Programas Internacionales.  "No solo nuestros estudiantes internacionales se benefician al estudiar aquí y aprender sobre la cultura de los E.U., sino que nuestros otros estudiantes  tambien aprenden sobre la exposición internacional de estos estudiantes.  La interacción aumenta el entendimiento humano y expande la discusión en el aula, proporcionando asi un mayor contenido de adonde estudiar diferentes temas."

La mayoría de los estudiantes internacionales de UWF estan matriculados en programas academicos ó estan envueltos en entrenamiento práctico opcional (OPT), mientras que el resto está matriculados en el Programa Intensivo de Inglés (IEP). Estudiantes en el Programa Intensivo de Inglés muchas veces hablan muy poco Inglés ó tal vez nada y se matriculan para clases que duran de seis a 14 semanas.  Reciben 20 horas de instrucciónes semanalmente y muchos se preparan para el Exámen de Inglés como Idioma Extranjero, la cual es necesario para poder estudiar en una Universidad Americana.  La matricula internacional ha aumentado en ambas áreas con un seis por ciento en el número de estudiantes estudiando en UWF ó envueltos en el Entrenamiento Práctico Opcional (OPT) y un 29 por ciento de incremento en el Programa Intensivo de Inglés.

Desde el 28 de Agosto, la matricula en general del UWF se mantuvo en 10,050.  La matricula Afro-Americana en su primer año de Universidad vio un incremento de un 73 por ciento en un año, y una matricula de Asiacticos-Americanos tuvo un incremento de un 88 por ciento.

The University of West Florida has reported an 11 percent increase in the number of international students at the university this fall, bringing international enrollment to 309 students, up from 278 during the spring 2006 term. The students represent 60 countries on five continents. The largest portion of the students, 55 total, come from Brazil, followed by Japan with 39 students. Only the continents of Australia and Antarctica are not represented on UWF's campus.

"We are extremely pleased with the increased enrollment," said Phyllis Metcalf-Turner, associate vice president for the Office of Diversity and International Education and Programs. "Not only do our international students benefit from studying here and learning about U.S. culture, but our other students also learn from the international exposure to these students. That interaction broadens human understanding and expands classroom discussion, providing a greater context from which to study issues."

The majority of UWF's international students are enrolled in academic programs or are involved in optional practical training (OPT), while the remainder are enrolled in the Intensive English Program (IEP).  Students in the IEP often speak little or no English and enroll for classes that range from six to 14 weeks. They receive 20 hours of instruction weekly and many prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is required to study at American universities. International enrollment increased in both areas with a six percent increase in the number of students studying at UWF or involved in OPT and a 29 percent increase in the IEP.

As of Aug. 28, UWF's overall enrollment stood at 10,050.  African-American freshman enrollment saw a 73 percent increase in one year, and Asian-American enrollment increased by 88 percent.
