Un Tiempo Para el Hospicio ~ A Time for Hospice (English Version)

Noviembre es el mes de Nacional Hospice, la temporada mas ocupado para el Hospicio de Covenant.  El hospicio es una clase especial de cuidado y apoyo a la gente en la ultima fase de una enfermedad mortal.

El Hospicio de Covenant, en Pensacola, Florida desde 1984,  es ampliamente reconocido en la  comunidad por el socorro y tratamiento paliativo que ofrece a la comunidad.  Pacientes reciben visitas del doctor en sus hogares. Además, pacientes son aceptados por la necesidad de la enfermedad y no por la habilidad de pago. El cuidado es iniciado por un equipo interdisciplinario que consiste de profesionales en las disciplinas de servicios sociales, clero, ayudante de salud a domicilio, doctores, y enfermeras.

Recientemente una familia de Ecuador pidió los servicios del Hospicio para  su  padre que sufría con enfermedades asociado con la ansiedad. La familia tenia ya un año de cuidar a su padre, las hermanas tomaban turnos en el baño, administración de comida y medicamento.  También, hospicio pudo ofrecer apoyo emocional y conseguir un voluntario que ofreció acompañamiento mientras las hermanas pasaron una tarde en compras juntas.

Experiencias como éstas se pueden leer en un pictórico  “The Faces of Life.” Este libro fue creado por el Hospicio de Covenant en 2005 para que uno pueda ver que el hospicio es  sobre la vida y no la muerte. The month of November is one of the busiest months at Covenant Hospice as November is National Hospice month. Hospice care is a special kind of care for individuals who find themselves with life limiting diseases and have less than a year to live once the disease has followed its natural progression.

Covenant Hospice is greatly respected in the community as a leader in comfort and palliative care, and has served the community of Pensacola, Florida since 1984. Doctors will visit patients in their homes. Patients are accepted based on the terminal diagnosis and not on their ability to pay. Care is provided with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals including social workers, chaplains, home health aids, doctors, and nurses.

Recently, a family originally from Ecuador contacted Covenant Hospice regarding the care of their sick father.  The family had been shouldering the care of their loved one for a year, taking turns going to doctor appointments, dressing, feeding and administering medication. hospice care offered emotional support for the family. Additionally, a social worker arranged for a volunteer to sit with the father that allowed the sisters to spend some needed personal time together.

Stories like this can be read with pictorials in “The Faces of Life” The book was created by Covenant Hospice in 2005 as a way to show their belief that hospice care is not about how you die, but how you live.  The Faces of Life book will be released November 1, 2006. As we enter the holiday season, Covenant Hospice offers the seminar “Coping with the Holidays Following a Loss.”  The session is free of charge and will be held at 2001 Palafox Street on Thursday, November 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Registration is required.
