Henry’s Costa Mex, ubicado en el 620 Este de Nine Mile Road (Hwy 90) en Pensacola, fué recientemente comprado por Max y Sophia Muñoz, pero no todo ha cambiado en Henry’s Costa Mex. Hay mucho de que hablar sobre los cambios que se estan dando en el Henry’s Costa Mex.  El restaurante, ubicado en el 620 Este de Nine Mile Road (Hwy 90) en Pensacola, fue recientemente comprado por Max y Sophia Muñoz, y mientras el nombre del establecimiento permanece igual, los planes que tienen para ofrecer a la comunidad son grandes.

Lo primero que notará la gente al entrar por la puerta es la adición al menu.  Henry’s ahora ofrece diez platos tradicionales Peruanos incluyendo ceviche, ceviche de mariscos, ají de gallina, parihuela, y sopa a la minuta.  Adicionalmente, el bar ahora ofrece cerveza Peruana.

“No estoy interesado en ver mi nombre en el letrero o hacerme famoso,” dijo Muñoz, “No para mí, es de hacer las cosas como deben ser. Hemos ya ordenado la máquina para hacer ‘pollo a la braza’ desde el  Peru, va a estar muy buena.”

Los planes de Muñoz no terminan ahí. Eventualmente, planea ofrecer platos de todos los países Latinos.  Espera incluir platos de Colombia, Bolivia y Brazil para fin de año.

Pero Muñoz dice que no todo es sobre la comida.  Espera que la gente encuentre en el restaurante un lugar para compartir la cultura Latina al exhibir trabajos de arte y demostrar diferentes formas de Música y bailes Latinos, hasta poesía.

“Quiero que sepan que los Latinos son más que trabajadores de construcción,” dijo, “He conocido muchos Latinos talentosos aquí, y queremos compartir nuestras tradiciones con los Americanos y con nosotros mismos.”

Muñoz podra estar más familiarizado con el multiculturismo que otras personas.  Aunque nacio en Mexico, fué criado en Peru por su madre Italiana y su padre Peruano.  Él y su esposa han vivido en Pensacola desde el 2001, y encuentran que este es un momento muy importante para los Latinos en esta área.

“Lo principal es apoyarnos los unos a los otros.  Si quieren salir por una hamburguesa, vayan a un restaurante Latino,” dice Muñoz, “No tiene que ser el mío, pero que sea un restaurante Latino.”

Afortunadamente, no todo ha cambiado en Henry’s. Un cara familiar es Carlos Rodrigues, el Gerente del restaurante.  Rodrigues, quien es de Portugal, dice que esta ansioso por los cambios que Muños esta por traer al restaurante.

“Yo creo que Max vino del cielo,” Rodruiguez dijo graciosamente.  “Si, es un negocio, pero las ideas realmente son de apoyar a la comunidad Latina.  Es fantástico para Pensacola porque despues del (Huracán) Iván, hay tantos más Latinos aquí y ahora podemos ofrecer algo para todos los Latinos, no solo comida Mexicana.”

There’s a lot of talk about the changes that are taking place at Henry’s Costa Mex.  The restaurant, located at 620 East Nine Mile Road (Hwy 90) in Pensacola, was recently purchased by Max and Sophia Muñoz, and while the name of the establishment remains the same, plans for what they will offer the community are big.

The first thing most people will notice when they walk through the door is the new addition to the menu.  Henry’s now offers ten traditional Peruvian meals including ceviche, ceviche de mariscos, ají de gallina (a chicken-based stew), parihuela, and sopa a la minuta.  Additionally, the bar now offers Peruvian beer.

“I’m not interested in seeing my name on a sign or to become famous,” Muñoz said, “No, for me, it’s about doing it the right way.  We’ve already ordered a ‘pollo a la braza’ machine all the way from Peru.  It’s going to be nice.”

Muñoz’ plans for the restaurant don’t stop there.  Eventually, he plans to offer dishes from all Latin countries.  He expects to include dishes from Colombia, Bolivia and Brazil by the end of the year.

But Muñoz says that it’s not all about the food.  He hopes that people will find the restaurant is a place to share and experience Latino culture by displaying works of art, demonstrating different forms of Latino music and dance, even poetry.

“I want people to know that Latinos are more than construction workers,” he said. “I have met so many talented Latinos here, and we want to share our traditions with Americans and with each other.”

Muñoz might be more familiar with multiculturalism than most people.  Though he was born in Mexico, he was raised in Peru by his Italian mother and Peruvian father.  He and his wife have lived in Pensacola since 2001, and finds this to be an important time for Latinos in the area.

“The main thing that we have to do as a people is support each other.  If you want to go out for a burger, go to a Latino restaurant,” Muñoz says, “It doesn’t have to be mine, but any Latino restaurant.”

Fortunately, not everything has changed at Henry’s.  One familiar sight is Carlos Rodrigues, the restaurant manager.  Rodrigues, who is from Portugal, says he’s eager for the changes that Muñoz is bringing to the restaurant.

“I think Max came from heaven,” Rodrigues says graciously.  ”Yes, it’s a business, but his ideas are really about supporting the Latino community.  It’s fantastic for Pensacola because now after (Hurricane) Ivan, there are so many Latinos here and now we can offer something for all Latinos, not just Mexican food.”
