¿Qué es el autismo?
El autismo es una incapacidad relativa al desarrollo mental que típicamente aparece durante los tres primeros años de vida. Es resultado de un trastorno neurológico que afecta el funcionamiento del cerebro y sus comportamientos asociados pueden ocurrir en 1 de cada 110 nacimientos. El autismo no conoce las fronteras raciales, étnicas y sociales. El ingreso económico, el modo de vida y los niveles educativos de la familia, no afectan la posibilidad de que estos casos ocurran.
Los individuos con autismo generalmente exhiben por lo menos la mitad de las características señaladas en esta lista y síntomas pueden oscilar de leves a graves y varían en intensidad:
- Dificultad en juntarse con otros niños
- Insistencia en todo idéntico, resistencia a cambios de rutina
- Risa y sonrisa inapropiadas
- Ningún temor real a los peligros
- Poco o ningún contacto visual
- Aparente insensibilidad al dolor
- Ecolalia (repetición de palabras y frases en vez de un lenguaje normal)
- Prefiere estar solo; posee una manera reservada
- Demasiada o poca actividad física que se manifiesta en lo extremo
- Las rabietas; exhibe angustia sin ninguna razón aparente
- No responde a indicaciones verbales; actúa como si fuera sordo
- Apego inapropiado a objetos
- Dificultad en expresar sus necesidades; emplean los gestos o señalan a los objetos en vez de usar palabras.

What is Autism?
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. It is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain and can occur in 1 in 110 births. Autism is not limited by racial, ethnic or social barriers. The economic status, way of life or educational levels of the family have no effect on whether or not Autism occurs.
Individuals with Autism generally exhibit at least have of the characteristics within the following list and the symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may vary in intensity:
Difficulty in socializing with other children
- Insisting in sameness and resistance to change
- Smiles or laughs at inappropriate times
- Has no real fear to dangers
- Little or no eye contact
- Apparent insensitivity to pain
- Echolalia (repeats words and phrases instead of having normal language)
- Prefers to be alone, possesses a reserved manner/personality
- A lot or little physical activity manifested by the extreme
- Has temper tantrums (meltdowns): exhibits angst without an apparent reason
- Does not respond to verbal directions, acts as if he/she was deaf
- Inappropriate attachment to certain objects
- Difficulty in expressing his/her needs, uses facial expression or points at things
